Walnut, aluminum, electronics, nylon cord
10" x 4" x 18"

A light designed from readily-available, standard parts, combined with solid black walnut and a soft, fabric cord. This project was an experiment in using pre-made parts, and the entire piece is easily disassembled/reassembled, constructed with magnets and press-fit components. The overly luminous fluorescent light is juxtaposed with polished, elegant materials to create new associations and applications for an industrial product.

		<description>GZA @ RISD

After reading an article during the spring of 2012 about GZA the Genius' new efforts to merge hip-hop with science, I invited him to speak at RISD on behalf of RISD STEAM. Over 500 members of the RISD and Providence communities came to listen to GZA share his plans for a new album, education reform, and his continual transformation of the art of hip-hop.

For me, planning the lecture was a great lesson in organization, management, fundraising, event promotion, and even a little bit of graphic design.

<description>STEAM by Region: Selected Examples of STEAM in Action

This series of regional U.S. maps breaks down existing infrastructure in industry and education for potential support of the STEM to STEAM initiative. I worked along side Carly Ayres and Ryan Murphy to identify and research candidates who value design principles, have strong design teams, or support art and design initiatives. The deliverables for the project were designed to engage viewers from each respective region.

The maps were distributed to the two hundred attendees of RISD's latest congressional briefing in Washington, DC on February 14, 2013.

		<description>ARCADE: STEM + A = STEAM
As President of the RISD STEAM Club, I had the amazing opportunity to feature edit the Spring quarterly issue of ARCADE Magazine. Working closely with the Executive Director and Editor of ARCADE and the RISD Media Group, we compiled twenty pages of articles written by students, educators, and professionals, to highlight the importance of adding art and design thinking back into national education policy.

Contributors to this feature section include President of RISD and STEAM advocate, John Maeda, Jon Perera of Adobe Inc., Matt Goldman, founder of the Blue Man Group, Roger Hanlon of the Marine Biological Laboratory, and my peers at RISD, Carly Ayres, Ryan Mather, Lizzie Kripke, and Samantha Dempsey.

		<description>RISD STEAM

STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) + A (art/design thinking) = STEAM

After working on the STEMtoSTEAM initiative in RISD's office of Government Relations, I noticed a disconnect between the ambitions of the school's administration and students. In response, I started a student interest group, RISD STEAM, as a way to involve the RISD community as a whole.

RISD STEAM aims to engage students with the rising push to include art and design thinking into the traditional "STEM" model of education. By turning STEM into STEAM, the club strives to foster a new kind of learning, promoting high-level, transformative thinking among the next generation of leaders and innovators.

The group encourages students to investigate the principles of STEAM in their own work, by hosting events and exposing students to resources within the Providence community and beyond.

Today, a year after starting the group, the RISD STEAM network has grown to include students from RISD, Brown University, and MIT, and is constantly expanding.

As the founder of RISD STEAM, I hope to bridge some of the gaps between my own design work, the political aspirations of STEMtoSTEAM, and outreach of artists to the scientific community.

		<description>RISD Cycling Kit
The official racing uniform of the RISD Cycling Team for the 2012-2013 ECCC season, designed in collaboration with Jules Goguely.

To best meet the needs of our team, we decided on a clean look for a new year, while at the same time referencing the kit designs from the previous two cycling seasons. With a slew of new sponsors came the challenge of incorporating their logos onto the kit without cluttering the appearance. Most importantly, it had to be clear from both the front and back that our riders are from RISD.

Additional symbols were added to display the culture and history of our team. Brown and red stripes wrap the right sleeve to represent our friendly relationship with the Brown University team, and above that, an ode to our hometown, Providence. On the left shoulder is the personal logo of founding team captain, Evan Murphy, and "Wicked Vibes" appears on the back of the legs as a shout-out to last year's captains, George Coffin and Oliver Henderson. The anchor on the backside of the bib shorts symbolizes Rhode Island heritage. The words across the anchor subtly inform riders behind ours that they are losing to an art school.

Instead of investing in a modular design, which could be more practical in theory, I chose to focus on creating a design that could relay the observation mentioned above.
